OUR HISTORY & NURSERY ETHOS
White Stork Nursery was founded by Laurafay Muranka and Natalie Turner, who together bring over 25 years of experience running nurseries and leading early years education. Over more than two decades, they have continually studied, refined, and championed the best ways to support children during their most crucial developmental years from ages 0 to 5.
Driven by a shared passion to put the most caring, varied, and effective early years methods into practice, they set out to create a unique, independent nursery. They envisioned a place built on strong family values, deep rooted stability, and natural wonder.
This vision was inspired by Laurafay’s own family history. Her grandfather grew up on a farm in Lithuania, where he spent his childhood sitting beneath a massive oak tree. Decades later, though the farm is gone, that oak tree still stands strong. Perched safely in those tall branches are the nests of the White Stork a bird celebrated for bringing peace, protection, and harmony to the homes they build upon. Wanting to recreate that exact sense of enduring strength and safe sanctuary for local families, Laurafay and Natalie established White Stork Nursery.

Our Setting
The Heritage of The Tannery
To bring this vision to life, Laurafay and Natalie needed a home with character, strength, and roots. They found it right here in Northowram at The Tannery Business Centre.
Originally built as an industrial tannery, these historic stone walls were once a bustling hub of Yorkshire craftsmanship, where raw elements were patiently and skillfully worked, shaped, and transformed over time.
We fell in love with the resilience and history of this landmark building and have completely transformed it into a warm, light filled, and safe sanctuary. While the old industrial tools are gone, the spirit of meaningful transformation remains. We have turned a piece of local history into a beautiful, secure nest where the next generation can begin their lives.
OUR ETHOS
Nurturing Unique Potential
How should a child develop during their first five years?
Although a child's brain forms before they enter the world, the vital neural connections only begin to multiply once they start to interact with the environment around them. Because of this, the experiences a child has within a safe, secure setting are absolutely crucial to their lifelong development.
At White Stork Nursery, we fill our days with the building blocks of a rich, well-balanced life:
Meaningful Interactions
A child's emotional security is the foundation for all future learning. We place a deep emphasis on building strong, trusting relationships between our children and our dedicated educators. By maintaining a supportive and attentive environment, we ensure every child feels seen, heard, and valued.
These positive bonds give children the confidence to socialise, share, and collaborate with their peers. Through guided play and group activities, we help them develop essential life skills like empathy, communication, and emotional resilience, teaching them how to navigate the world with kindness and confidence.
Sensory Exploration
Young children learn with their entire bodies. Their brains are wired to understand the world through what they can touch, see, hear, taste, and smell. Our nursery spaces are intentionally designed to spark this natural curiosity.
From messy play and textured materials to immersive storytelling, music, and visual arts, we provide a rich tapestry of sensory experiences. These activities do more than just entertain; they actively stimulate neural pathways, enhance fine motor skills, encourage scientific thinking, and lay the vital groundwork for early language and mathematical concepts.
Active Discovery
Learning at White Stork Nursery doesn't happen sitting still. We believe that physical movement is fundamentally linked to cognitive development and well being. Our daily routines are packed with opportunities for children to challenge themselves physically, whether through expressive dance, structured games, or energetic outdoor play.
We also believe in extending our classroom beyond our historic walls. Through regular, enriching day trips out into the Northowram community and the wider world, we introduce children to new environments, landscapes, and real life experiences. This will instill a lifelong sense of adventure, a healthy lifestyle, and a genuine curiosity about the world around them.
We believe that every single child is completely unique. To thrive during these crucial early years, children need to be encouraged, supported, and cared for in a bespoke way that celebrates their individual personality and pace.
By weaving the historic strength of our Tannery home with our decades of professional expertise, we ensure that your child is given a solid, unwavering foundation so that when they turn five, they are fully confident and ready to fly away to school.
